Position: Microgreen and Greenhouse Operations Manager

About the Position: 

Heart City Farm is currently looking for someone to train as a manager for our microgreen and greenhouse propagation operations. Throughout the early winter months you will work alongside the owners to immerse yourself in all aspects of our microgreen production. There will also be opportunities to help with market prep and at the farmer’s market if interested. By late winter, training for spring seedling production will begin and by spring of 2024 the aim is for the applicant to be able to manage and oversee all aspects of microgreen production with help from 1-2 seasonal staff.

Start Date: January 2024 (specific start date to be determined), starting part-time and working up to full-time by late winter/early spring 2024

Duties & Responsibilities:

Microgreen Operations: tasks include seeding microgreens on a weekly basis, watering microgreens and grow room maintenance, harvesting microgreens on a weekly basis, packing and organizing microgreen orders, compiling microgreen seed & soil inventory for ordering, keeping work stations tidy and clean, performing other related duties as required.

 

Greenhouse Operations: tasks include following 2024 seeding schedule and seeding vegetables and flowers according to crop plan, potting up seedlings, watering maintenance, general greenhouse maintenance, performing other related duties as required.

 

Qualifications:

• 2+ seasons of farming experience and greenhouse propagation is an asset

• Prior experience with microgreens is an asset

• Management experience is an asset

• Full Driver’s License is an asset

• Able to follow instructions carefully and accurately

• Maintains attention to detail while keeping a steady pace of work

• Self-motivated and able to work in a fast-paced environment

• Positive attitude, sense of humour and a keen interest in growing microgreens & farming

• Willingness to perform physically demanding, repetitive and strenuous tasks

• Able to lift 50lbs on a regular basis

• Comfortable working indoors in a warehouse & greenhouse setting as well as outdoors in all weather conditions

• Comfortable working alone and with a team

• Applicants must have reliable transportation to and from the farm

 

Position Details:

• Work Hours: Winter 2024 – approx. 20hrs/week, Spring/Summer 2024 – approx. 35-40hrs/week

• 7am-5pm, start & finish times may be adjusted depending on time of season.

• This is aimed to be a long-term position.

• Wage: $18/hr to start with wage review after 3-month probation period. Successful applicants will receive a complementary vegetable share.

• 2 paid sick days/year

• $200 work wear reimbursement/year
